A Brief Talk on British Literature

On December 1, 2014, Associate Professor Executive Dean of the Department of English gave a lecture on British literature in the lecture hall of the college library. With the theme of “reading classic works and tasting the essence of what life offers”, Professor Chen made event informative, interactive and vivid.


During the lecture, Professor Chen covered many aspects and introduced many letters of men, ranging from William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon to Bronte Sisters “Wuthering Height” to Henry VIII. With a touch of humor, Professor Chen was able to realize what is implied in British literature. During the lecture, Professor reiterated that it is vital if the students can learn about the British literature because it will help the students to enhance their general quality as well as the ability to appreciate the beauty of the literature and improve their language skills. “The students majoring in English should take it as a habit to read the authentic novels,” she said. “The students should learn to develop a habit of step by step, that is to say, beginning with the simplified novels and the Department of English should call on the students to read extensively so as to make it popular among the students,” she added. All the students present showed great interest in her talk and asked her many questions and they said that such a lecture was important because it could be taken as an effective way.

Professor Chen ended her lecture with part of the classic movie “Jane”. Students said that through the lecture they realized the importance of reading and understanding the literature. It is of paramount significance for them to read and appreciate the authentic works.
